|Conductor and arranger John Wilson formed the John Wilson Orchestra in 1994. The orchestra has an international reputation as a unique handpicked ensemble of some of the world’s finest musicians. The orchestra specialises in recording contemporary film sound tracks and authentic concert performances of classic Hollywood film musical scores. Outside of the concert hall the orchestra has contributed to sound track recordings for films including 'The Gathering Storm' and in 2007 was nominated for a Grammy Award for ‘Best Soundtrack’ for ‘Beyond the Sea’ starring Kevin Spacey as Bobby Darrin.
The orchestra has recorded critically acclaimed CDs for Vocalion including 'This is The John Wilson Orchestra', 'Orchestral Jazz', 'Shall We Dance?' 'Soft Lights and Sweet Music', 'Moonlight Becomes You', 'Film and Television Music of Angela Morley' and 'Dance Date'. In addition the John Wilson Orchestra has collaborated on 2 recordings with Sir Paul McCartney.
The orchestra regularly performs on British TV and was recently invited to perform a concert for HRH Prince of Wales American Foundation at Buckingham Palace.
In August 2009 the John Wilson Orchestra made its debut at the BBC Proms at the Royal Albert Hall in a concert celebrating the 75th anniversary of the MGM Film musicals. The concert was broadcast live on British television. In August 2010 the orchestra returned to the BBC Proms in a celebration of Rodgers & Hammerstein film musicals and returned to our TV screens in December 2010 with ‘Swingin Christmas’ for BBC Television starring Anna Jane Casey, Seth MacFarlane and Curtis Stigers which was broadcast on Christmas night. In 2011 the John Wilson Orchestra returned to the BBC Proms with ‘Hooray For Hollywood’ and in the autumn of 2011 performed a sell out national tour of the UK.
In 2011 the John Wilson Orchestra signed an exclusive recording contract with EMI and released 'That’s Entertainment – A Celebration of the MGM Film Musicals'.
